BT Sport to be renamed – what it means for rugby fans

Later this year, BT Sport will undergo a rebranding and will be renamed as TNT Sports.

A new channel will be launched next season to feature their Gallagher Premiership rugby games and other live action.

The rebranding is a result of the merger between BT Sport and Warner Bros Discovery, which also owns Eurosport.

The new brand will be launched in the summer and will ultimately bring together the live sport offerings of BT Sport and Eurosport under the TNT Sports name.

Currently, both BT Sport and Eurosport hold the rights to major events such as Premier League and Champions League football, Premiership Rugby, Grand Slam tennis, and the Olympic Games.

Andrew Georgiou, board member of the Joint Venture and President and Managing Director, Warner Bros. Discovery Sports Europe, said: “Today is another important step towards the launch of a simpler and even more compelling offering for sports fans in the U.K & Ireland.

“The TNT Sports name is already synonymous with premium live sport in a number of countries around the world and a further sign of the global scale and expertise that Warner Bros. Discovery brings to its partnership with BT.

“While Warner Bros. Discovery is excited to contribute its global scale and capabilities, together with its growing portfolio of premium entertainment, we are also determined to ensure we don’t compromise on the inimitable, local style that is at the heart of the way BT Sport has connected with fans over the past decade. Remaining authentically local will remain key to our success.”

What now changes?

Although there are currently no plans to adjust the subscription fees, company executives have not provided any assurances that the pricing will remain the same in the future, which would depend on any modifications to their live sport offerings.

After the summer rebranding, users who access BT Sport through its streaming app will have to use the Discovery+ app instead. The objective is to migrate the most popular functions of the BT Sport app to the Discovery+ app.
