England fans blamed Jonny Wilkinson for Harry Kane’s penalty miss during World Cup

England fans have pointed the finger at rugby legend Johnny Wilkinson for Harry Kane’s penalty miss against France in 2022, following the resurfacing of an old comedy sketch.

The video, which recently gained traction on social media, shows Wilkinson advising Kane on penalty-taking, with an unexpected twist.

The unfortunate miss occurred as Kane sent the ball soaring over the crossbar, a rare blunder for the England captain known for his 84% penalty success rate.

Kane, who has a stellar record spanning a 13-year professional career, found himself outwitted by his Tottenham Hotspur teammate, French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The comedy sketch, filmed for Sport Relief in 2018, features Wilkinson alongside comedian John Bishop. In the video, Wilkinson humorously instructs Kane to aim high and over the goal, referencing his own winning kick at the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

“That’s how you do it,” Wilkinson declares with satisfaction, leaving Kane puzzled as he responds, “You just put it over by a mile.” Wilkinson, undeterred, replies, “Yes, but that’s how I won a World Cup with England.”

Daily Mail’s England Rugby team of the future from 2012 didn’t age well… Where are they now 12 years on?

In 2012, the Daily Mail’s website looked ahead and predicted which young talents might one day form the core of the England team.

While we usually wouldn’t be overly critical of inaccurate predictions when looking back with perfect hindsight (we’ve certainly made our fair share of mistakes over the years!), it’s hard to resist a bit of skepticism when it comes to the Mail. So, let’s just shrug it off and move on!
