England star made unwanted history today during win against Japan

Charlie Ewels has made history as the first player to be sent off in consecutive Tests after receiving a red card for a dangerous clearout on Japan captain Michael Leitch.

The Bath second-row is now likely to face suspension for the Test series against New Zealand and becomes the first England player to be shown two red cards in international rugby.

The incident occurred in the 73rd minute with England on the attack. Ewels misjudged his clearout at the breakdown, coming in from the side and driving his shoulder into Leitch’s knee, bringing the Japan captain to the ground.

Such lower-limb clearouts were explicitly targeted in a welfare-driven law update last year.

Squidgy Rugby posted on X: “Charlie Ewels is the 11th player to receive multiple red cards in Test rugby, but the first to do so in consecutive tests. Tomos Lavinini’s eyes just lit up with opportunity and envy.”

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of five unwanted England records players would rather forget.

#1. Most carded player: James Haskell – 6

No England player has been carded more than the entertaining flanker, who spent an entire hour of his international career in the sin-bin.

#2. Most caps without a try: Joe Marler – 93

The loosehead may have never managed a five-pointer for England over the course of his 93 caps, but it is still within his power to change that as he is still part of Steve Borthwick’s current plans (unless he retires again).

Reacting to his record, Marler said: “Some people might call me crazy but I’m proud of it. Us props aren’t meant to score tries anyway,”
