Jonny May has scored his first try for new club, it’s an absolute cracker

Former England winger Jonny May has opened his account in the French Pro D2, scoring his first try for Soyaux Angoulême in just his second appearance.

Less than a year ago, May was representing England in the 2023 Rugby World Cup semi-final against South Africa.

Now, after retiring from international duty and leaving Gloucester and the Gallagher Premiership, he’s adapting to the challenges of France’s second tier.

May made his debut last weekend in a 31-24 victory over Aurillac but didn’t cross the line.

However, in Friday’s home game against Brive, he opened his try-scoring tally, collecting a bouncing ball inside the opposition’s 22 and finishing in the corner.

New career:

May, who has ventured into podcasting, discussed his exploration of post-playing opportunities, including the potential of joining the fire service with the RAF.

He said: “I am still hoping to play for the next couple of years or year, I am not quite ready to stop playing yet, but the RAF could help me come in during the off-season.

“It would help me get a bit of a foot up while I am still playing.”
