‘New Women’s Rugby Attendance Record’ – Paris 2024 Women’s Rugby Sevens Day One Recap

The first day of the 2024 Paris Olympics Women’s Rugby sevens has been wrapped up, with all 12 qualifying teams experiencing the packed out Stade de France. The first day of the women’s rugby sevens set a new attendance record for any women’s rugby event, as a reported 66,000 fans packed themselves into the home of French rugby to witness the first two pool stage rounds.

This record could well be broken later today, as we get set for the quarter finals and placing matches from 19:00 this evening (UK time). The first match of the Olympic women’s rugby sevens saw a British & Irish derby, with Team GB recording a 21-12 win over Ireland. However both teams from the Isles would end their first day with a win and a loss, as their evening fixtures took polarising turns.

Team GB took on the heavily favourited Australians, after the Wallaroos had kicked off their campaign with a 34-5 hammering of South Africa. Australia stepped it up another gear, and with Maddison Levi leading from the front, ran in six tries for a 36-5 landslide win against Great Britain. Ireland turned their favours around to culminate Pool B, as they etched up an emphatic 38-0 shut-out win over South Africa, to finish the day level on points with Great Britain.

We will be covering all of the action from Day 2 in Paris, as Team GB and Ireland push for a place in the quarterfinals. Tom Sansom will be covering the afternoon matches, before Jon Page takes over for the evening session at 19:00. Follow along for our live score updates from 13:00.
