‘Out until 2025’ – Red Roses and GB Olympic Sevens centre Meg Jones to miss France and Black Ferns Tests & WXV with Injury

The Red Roses have suffered a significant injury blow, as their preparations continue ahead of their upcoming September Tests against France and New Zealand. England centre Meg Jones has been ruled out of the two fixtures, as well as England’s upcoming WXV1 campaign through injury.

A statement from the Red Roses confirmed that the Great Britain sevens star has sustained a ‘significant ankle injury which requires surgery’. This is devastating news for the midfielder, as Jones now misses out on the Red Roses trip to Canada, as they look to retain their WXV title across September and October.

The Leicester Tigers Women’s star was last in action at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where alongside fellow Red Roses flyer Ellie Kildunne, achieved a seventh placed finish with Team GB. Red Roses head coach John Mitchell said: “It’s always upsetting when you lose a teammate to injury, especially someone with Meg’s personality, capability and leadership.

“When you lose a player of Meg’s ability, it presents the chance for someone else to step up and seize the opportunity.”

Mitchell has not down-played the severity of the injury, and expressed how the earliest expected return date for Jones is ahead of the 2025 Guinness Women’s Six Nations. Here’s hoping that the midfield maestro gets back to her best in time for the tournament, as England search for a record-equalising seventh consecutive Women’s Six Nations title, on the run up to the home soil hosted 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup.

“We wish Meg well for her recovery and look forward to having her back in the squad ahead of next year’s Six Nations.”
