Statement: Eddie Jones breaks his silence after hitting ‘all-time low’

Japan remains winless in three matches under returning coach Eddie Jones, after a 42-14 defeat by Italy, conceding five tries to two at the Sapporo Dome on Sunday.

Australia-born Jones, who previously coached Japan from 2012 to 2015, returned to the role this year under controversial circumstances after resigning as Wallabies coach.

In his second stint, Japan has suffered losses to England, Georgia, and now Italy, causing them to drop two places to 14th in the world rankings.

Despite the team’s poor performance in their Test matches, Jones remains confident in his players’ potential.

“A tough start. It’s always tough to start with losses. But I am really optimistic about the direction of the team,” he told reporters.

“I know everyone is disappointed. I’m disappointed with the results but I’m not disappointed with the direction of the team.”
