Major Squad Changes

As expected, Springboks director of rugby, Rassie Erasmus, has introduced significant changes to the team. The two-time Rugby World Cup-winning coach has made 10 alterations to the side that defeated New Zealand in Cape Town two weeks ago. Notably, regular captain Siya Kolisi will be rested for this encounter.

Kolisi’s involvement had been in question after fracturing his cheek in the recent victory over the All Blacks at Ellis Park. Despite travelling with the team, Erasmus confirmed that Kolisi was not intended to play unless needed as an emergency replacement.

Kolisi’s New Role from the Coaches Box

Speaking to SA Rugby Magazine, Erasmus explained the decision to include Kolisi in the touring party but not on the field. “Siya wasn’t brought here to play, but to be on standby if anybody gets injured. One of the goals is to get Siya in the coaches’ box,” Erasmus said.

“We usually have Duane [Vermeulen] on the sideline relaying messages to Siya and the decision-makers on the field. However, Siya doesn’t know what happens in the coaches’ box. We want him to understand the decision-making process and how we send messages down to the field.”

Erasmus highlighted that the same approach was taken with Vermeulen, who gained valuable insights into the coaching process. “Duane said after that he had a new understanding, and we hope to achieve the same with Siya this weekend.”
