This weekend the BKT United Rugby Championship will host their Unity Round of rugby action, in support of the LGBTQ+ community. The URC is flying the rainbow flag, and partnered up with legendary rugby referee Nigel Owens for an empowering message.
Posted on the United Rugby Championship’s social media channels, Owens provides an emotive voiceover for the league’s support of the LGBTQ+ community, and re-affirms the message that discrimination of any kind is not tolerated in rugby.
The URC are supporting LGBTQ+ rights charity Stonewall, in their Rainbow Laces campaign. The campaign has been apart of the sporting world since 2013, with inclusion to all promoted across many sports.
“Join us and ensure that disrespectful language, attitudes and abuse, has no place in our sport.” The message is clear from the URC and Owens, and echoes the thoughts of the wider rugby family. Owens is a proud LGBTQ+ advocate and speaker, who is respected by all across rugby.
He delivers the message impactfully well, with the video package exciting rugby fans for the Unity Round. The upcoming round of the URC is an important one, and reminds everyone that rugby is an inclusive space for all.
